Sucess Case | Secretaria de Saúde Municipal de Canaã dos Carajás: Quality Management in Brazil’s Unified Health System (SUS)

Applying ISO 9001 principles to public healthcare requires more than standardizing documents. It is necessary to organize processes, engage teams, and create a structure capable of sustaining quality across a large and complex operation.

This was the challenge faced by the Municipal Health Department of Canaã dos Carajás, in the state of Pará, Brazil. With 1,301 public employees and a network comprising primary care units, municipal hospitals, and various specialized services, the institution sought to strengthen its management without losing sight of patient care.

How Can Quality Management Be Structured Across a Public Healthcare Network?

To move forward on this journey, the Municipal Health Department invested in implementing a Quality Management System (QMS) aligned with the principles of ISO 9001:2015.

The project involved different departments and required a new approach to organizing, monitoring, and integrating the institution’s processes. Interact’s technology became part of this initiative, supporting the development of a more structured management system.

But how can the requirements of an international standard be adapted to the reality of Brazil’s Unified Health System? What challenges emerged during implementation? And what was required to engage teams in this transformation?

“Implementing the Quality Management System at the Municipal Health Department was a transformative challenge, and Interact’s management software was a major differentiator throughout this process.”
