Sucess Case | Secretaria de Saúde Municipal de Canaã dos Carajás
Did you know it is possible to apply the principles of ISO 9001 within the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS)? That is exactly what happened in Canaã dos Carajás (PA/Brazil)!
In this Success Case, we present in detail how the Municipal Health Department decided to take on an ambitious and strategic challenge: to organize, standardize, and optimize its entire management structure. The central objective of this initiative was to ensure greater operational efficiency, strengthen safety in internal and external processes, and, above all, deliver more consistent and higher-quality results for the entire population served by the municipal health system.
To achieve these goals, the Department created a dedicated Quality sector, composed of a specialized team focused on implementing efficient and standardized management practices. With the support of this team, a complete Quality Management System (QMS) was implemented, capable of integrating all areas and processes of the Department.
This implementation involved a thorough analysis of the current operations, detailed mapping of all processes, clear definition of roles and responsibilities for each employee, standardization of documents and procedures, and the implementation of a continuous monitoring system for key performance indicators. All the work carried out strictly followed the guidelines established by the ISO 9001:2015 international standard, ensuring that best management practices were applied in a consistent and sustainable manner.
The results of this transformation quickly became visible and significant. Internal processes became more structured, clear, and objective, allowing each stage of service delivery to be carried out efficiently and safely. Management decisions began to be based on concrete data and reliable performance indicators, promoting greater accuracy and reducing errors.
In addition, internal teams received continuous training and started working in a more integrated and aligned manner, strengthening collaboration and engagement across the organization. For the population, these changes resulted in faster, safer, and more effective services, increasing satisfaction and trust in the services provided.
“Today, I see how this implementation has brought greater efficiency to the department’s processes, and I am proud to have contributed to a higher-quality public service. This experience was an enriching challenge that reinforced my passion for innovation and quality public management, for innovative administrative processes, and my desire to continue growing in this field.”
